Mr Ziad Estephan – consultant ophthalmologist and eye surgeon does private work at Spire Elland Hospital and at Yorkshire Optegra Eye Hospital. In addition, he works at the NHS at Calderdale and Huddersfield Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Cost of private cataract surgery. How much cataract surgery costs?

Variable among hospitals and depends on the chosen intraocular lens (implant). Monofocal intraocular lenses are cheaper than the so called premium lenses – the multi-focal intraocular lenses. Cheaper is not worse at all but you need to discuss your vision needs with your surgeon.

In other words, if you are looking for ideal vision then it would be better to go for monofocal intraocular lenses, however, if you are happy to compromise trade-off part of the quality of vision for distance for the return of being able to read without glasses in most of times, then you could choose multi-focal intraocular lenses. Please see the question above: What is the difference between monofocal, multifocal and toric intraocular lenses implanted during cataract surgery?

I do different laser surgery procedures for medical conditions like retinal diseases and for glaucoma. However, I do not do refractive laser eye surgery to see without glasses and correct short-sightedness (myopia) long-sightedness (hypermetropia) and astigmatism. In the UK, this is mainly done in chain high street companies like Optegra Eye Hospitals, Optical express, Optimax, Ultralase and so on.

I do toric intraocular lenses to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery.

Eye lens replacement surgery| I do not want to wear glasses| Blurred vision| I do not want to wear glasses when swimming

This is the same as cataract surgery. Whether you are replacing the eye lens because of cataract – cataract surgery, or because you do not want to wear glasses – refractive lens exchange. The principle is the same and the intraocular lenses re the same, monofocal intraocular lenses, multifocal intraocular lenses and toric intraocular lenses to correct astigmatism. Toric intraocular lenses are available for monofocal and multi-focal intraocular lenses.
