Becoming a cataract surgeon and retina specialist

Mr Estephan read medicine at Kiev Medical University in Ukraine where he graduated with honours in 1993. He began his training in the UK in 2005, where he gained further ophthalmic experience at a number of different NHS Hospitals. He worked at University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool and Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He obtained his specialist registration in February 2014.During his training, there was a significant development in imaging of disorders of the retina. As a result, the advances in OCT (optical coherence tomography) showed the tiniest details of the retina with up to 5 microns resolution. Mr Estephan’s interest in retinal disorders led him to pursue this new technology at the time and he established an acute macular degeneration (AMD) service whilst he was still a trainee.

At the present time, he is a specialist in complex cataract surgery and retinal disorders at Calderdale and Huddersfield hospitals, where he has worked for the past 11 years. He continues his practice in general ophthalmology. In addition, he is often consulted for complex ophthalmic conditions. He is also a trainer and has been training ophthalmic trainees to perform intraocular surgery. He is keen on teaching and works with local optometrists to improve community services and secondary care.

Mr Estephan has extensive experience in implanting premium and specialist intraocular lenses (IOLs) including toric and multifocal IOLs. His results are continuously audited with excellent reproducible results
